Abbreviations and acronyms. Part One

My dear students,
We have recently discussed some abbreviations that are quite popular in internet chat and messages, so I want you to become little bit more familiar with some other expressions used in formal writing.

Many of them you already know, because they come from Latin and are common:
- e.g.  means "for example" and comes from the latin expression "exempli gratia"
- i.e. means "that is" and comes from "id est" and can be translated into Russian as "т.е"
- I guess everyone knows NB which means "note well" and comes from "nota bene"
- one of the most famous is AD which means "the year of Our Lord" , "Anno Domini" in Latin

The one used to count years after the birth of Christ is called BC "before Christ" and is pronounced as individual letters.
The same works for EU and ID that you definitely know
ASAP should be also pronounced that way and means "as soon as possible"
